Equipment

  •  9-inch pie dish
  • Mixing bowl
  • Rolling Pin
  •  sharp knife
  • pastry brush

Ingredients

  • 2 pie crusts (homemade or store-bought)
  • 8 cups of apples (peeled, cored, and thinly sliced)
  • ½ cup of apples (peeled, cored, and thinly sliced)
  • ¼ cup of granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup of brown sugar
  • 1 tsp of ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp of ground nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp of salt
  • 2 tbsp of unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 egg yolk mixed with 1 tablespoon of milk (for egg wash)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  • Roll out one pie crust and transfer it to a 9-inch pie dish.
  • In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Toss until the apples are evenly coated.
  • Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pie crust and dot it with pieces of butter.
  • Roll out the second pie crust and use it to top the pie. Trim any excess dough and crimp the edges to seal.
  • Brush the egg wash over the top crust.
  • Cut a few slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  • Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  • Let the pie cool for at least 30 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

Recipe Notes:
  • Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for the perfect balance of flavors.
  • Cover the edges of the pie with foil or a pie shield to prevent them from getting too dark.
  • Let the pie cool for at least 30 minutes before slicing to allow the filling to set.

Special Tips:
  • Use cold ingredients when making the crust to ensure a flaky texture.
  • Don’t overwork the dough – handle it gently and as little as possible.
  • To prevent a watery filling, sprinkle a tablespoon of flour or cornstarch over the apples before adding the sugar and spices.
