Ingredients
  

  • 500 gm of plain flour
  • 1 tsp of salt
  • 1 tsp of bicarbonate of soda
  • 400 ml of buttermilk

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 200°C.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and bicarbonate of soda.
  • Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk.
  • Using a wooden spoon or your hands, mix the ingredients together until a dough forms.
  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead lightly for 1-2 minutes.
  • Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it onto a baking sheet.
  • Using a sharp knife, cut a deep cross into the top of the loaf.
  • Bake the bread in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  • Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.

Recipe Notes:
  • Be sure to use buttermilk in this recipe, as it provides the acid needed to activate the bicarbonate of soda and help the bread rise.
  • Don’t overwork the dough when kneading it, as this can make the bread tough.
